What Does Adventure Mean To Me?

Is adventure reaching the summit of a far-away mountain or walking the dog in the woods? Whilst many would argue about the latter, I believe it to be both. Stepping out the door leads to whole host of possibilities, be that meeting someone new, discovering a new place in your local area or backpacking across the world. Adventure is stepping out into the unknown, being slightly out of your comfort zone. If the thought alone scares you, you’re half way there.

We need not hold ‘adventure’ to travel alone, but to other experiences as well. I like to be adventurous with my cooking. Did someone say a key lime pie made from avocado? Yes please! Whilst I have indeed been lucky enough to do the typical adventurous things like jumping out a plane at 15,000ft, trekking a glacier and swimming with wild dolphins, my biggest adventure is coming in November...

So what is my big adventure? I will be leaving my comfortable loving home and job to travel America and Canada before working abroad in Australia for a year, and I'll be doing this all on my lonesome. Yes I've been to foreign speaking countries alone before but never for longer than a week. Others may deem this more 'adventurous' than well known, mother-tongues Western lands but I’ll be completely self dependant and free to do what I want, when I want. This is all a completely new experience to me. Even at university there were some restraints: house-mates, coursework deadlines and so forth. Now I will be alone and free. The world will well and truly be my oyster. Time to do my own thing and become me. Now if that isn't adventure, I don’t know what is.
