Fleabag Friday | Five Rescue Bunnies

Today's Fleabag Friday is brought to you by Chloé from Chloés Thoughts. Rabbits are one of the most neglected pets in the UK if not THE most neglected. Chl loves to adopt rescue bunnies and currently has five of them. Wow!

In the last few years, I have been lucky enough to welcome several pet rabbits into my life. My years as a bunny slave have given me not only constant giggles at their funny antics, and a lifetime’s supply of bunny fur all over my clothes… but also what feels like endless knowledge about their care.

I'm sure when someone mentions a pet rabbit, most people think “Bugs Bunny, carrots, etc etc”. Rabbits are the UK’s third most popular pet after dogs and cats, but according to statistics they are also the UK’s #1 most neglected pet. This is due to the fact that people don’t really understand their needs; like dogs and cats they require yearly vaccinations, and they benefit hugely from being neutered or spayed (depending on their gender). Additionally, they need a lot more space than people think, and they really are happier when living in pairs or groups. Contrary to popular opinion, rabbits do not make good pets for children because most of them hate being cuddled, and perhaps most shockingly of all, carrots are actually really bad for rabbits; most of their diet should be hay!

All of my rabbits have been rescues in one way or another, either directly from rescue centres of from people who couldn't care for them properly. They are wonderful pets as long as you understand them and do your research, which i why I've ended up with five of them! There are currently 60,000 bunnies in rescue centres in the UK who need homes... If you're considering getting some, perhaps you could check your local rescues first? Every time they do a happy flop, or throw themselves up in the air with glee, or give your hand a little lick, you'll be glad you rescued them. They really are worth it.

If you are interested in taking part in my Flea-Bag Friday series, please get in touch. All pets are welcome. Fish, frogs, donkeys, dogs, etc. Just comment below or send a tweet @teainthetub

Depending on the the response I get, I will be turning this into a competition where readers can vote on their favourite pet and the pet with the most votes will be sent some treats in the post.

  1. Love, love, love this!! There needs to be more sensible rabbit owners that understand and can cater to their needs. Diet is often misunderstood as well as living quarters and stimulation.
I miss my Bunny and Nike so much! These guys are stunning, really beautiful - lucky Chloe! Well done on being a rabbit rescuer too <3
    Always love this series!
