The Enchanted Tearoom, Cheltenham - Review

During the summer I treated my best friend Fiona to High Tea at The Enchanted Tearoom in Cheltenham. Just off the High Street, the tearoom is intimately located up a staircase. Upon arrival it feels special as the decoration and decor make you feel like you are walking into something from Alice in Wonderland. Naturally we stopped for a mini photoshoot on the bench at the top of the stairs.

This place fees like you're in a secret club. People weren't coming and going like standard tearooms. Here you have to book in advance. We were the first but slowly the room filled up with others who had special bookings. Very VIP. The room is very cosy and kitch. Mismatch chairs, little bits of crockery, teapots, salt pots etc. (I thought the salt pot was for sugar... Fortunately I had the sense to taste it before adding it to my tea. Mmmm salty tea.)

We were presented with a marvellous glass jug (can't remember the proper name. Anyone?) with a crystal stop and little milk bottle glasses for water. All the cakes are handmade and the choice of teas would impress tea connoisseurs world wide. Fiona went with the house tea and I enjoyed a good old assam. The scones were incredibly filling. Foolishly these were what we started on so eating all the cakes and sandwiches was an impossible challenge. Needless the say, the lady who served us was more than happy to box up the remaining cakes and sandwiches for us to eat later.

Special diets are catered to. It is best to alert them when you make the booking. When I explained I was a fussy vegetarian, rather than supplying "special" ingredients, they kindly asked me to bring my own ingredients which they'd happily add to a sandwich. I appreciate this as if they bought in additional ingredients the majority would only end up wasted. To save the bother I just had the standard vegetarian sandwiches.

Would I go again? Definitely! The decor was fabulous and the service was top notch. I love how nothing matches yet all goes together. Next time however, I will bring my own hummous so that I can fully enjoy the food.

  1. I like the sounds of this - I will have to investigate next time I am near Chelt. :) A shame though that it sounds like they don't have a wide range of veggie options to cater for different diets. The cakes look good though! Yum. x
