Exploring Natural Deodorants

Recently I've been looking more into the things I put onto my skin. I think what you put onto your skin is almost as important as what you put 'into' your skin so the less harmful products, the better and I've decided it's time I put that into practice.
First let me quickly explain the difference between deodorants and antiperspirants. Deodorants simply mask bad smells and some reduce the bacteria which cause these odors. Antiperspirants block the sweat glands, reducing the amount of sweat produced. These usually come alongside with a deodorant to make you smell fresh too.
Nearly all antiperspirants I've seen contain aluminium and are tested on animals. I sweat like a man so I've tended to ignore deodorants and opted for the completely-stop-perspiring products. Aluminium I could ignore but not animal testing until I did research into the harmful effects of aluminium such as how the aluminium ions expand blocking your glands and it's (possible) link to cancer. Sweating is one of your body's natural detoxing processes, getting rid of all the toxins that have built up in your body. Gross, I know but very important. Sweating is natural and healthy so surely blocking your glands isn't good for you right?
Thursday Plantation Tea Tree Antiperspirant

At Christmas I brought a Thursday Plantation Antiperspirant Sport. It is animal friendly and aluminium free which are steps in the right direction. The roll-on leaves a nice tea-tree scented layer which dried reasonably quickly so good to use when you're in a rush. However, as soon as I started to sweat it became moist causing me to have quite wet armpits and not from sweat. Despite this, the bacteria killing tea-tree did do the job well as there was no bad odor for most, if not all of the day once I had applied in the morning. Thursday Plantation antiperspirant is accidentally multinational. It gets rid of foot odor of you roll it onto your toes. This product is great if you're on a budget too as I paid around $5 (£2.50ish) and it's only just ran out 3 months later. Bargain.
MooGoo Fresh Cream Deodorant

Having recently reviewed MooGoo's products, I wanted to see if their deodorant was as good as the rest of their skincare. Despite the name Fresh Cream Deodorant, this is actually vegan plus it's not tested on animals, aluminium free and natural. Hurray!!! Whilst I love the smell of tea-tree, not everyone does. This one had a milder scent of Aussie Lemon Myrtle which is naturally antibacterial. It has a floral lemon scent. If you aren't too keen on citrus smells, don't worry as this one is very mild and smells so good. It also contains water, natural thickener (xantham gum) milk of magnesia, corn seed flour and extracts of witch hazel and hops. No nasty, weird ingredients whatsoever.

I've been really impressed with both of these products. I've tried salt based and solid natural deodorants before to no success but these liquid roll on's have gone beyond my expectations so I'm happy to say that I'm off aluminium based deodorants for good and looking forward to trying many many more natural products.

Have you tried any natural deodorants? Which ones would you recommend?

  1. I have not tried these two! I've been trying different natural deodorants over the last year or so and so far have really liked ones by Desert Essence and Jason. Would love to hear what other good ones you try in the future!

  2. I have tried some of the deodorants with bicarbonate of soda, but can't use them daily as they irritate my skin after a while x

    1. The MooGoo deodorant doesn't contain any bicarb and the company focuses on making products for those with sensitive skin and skin problems. The only ingredients involved are the ones I mentioned which is great as regular deodorants contain things I don't even know let alone can pronounce.
Thursday Plantation might be irritating if you're sensitive to tea tree oil.
