Fleabag Friday | Jack

To get the FleabagFriday ball back up and rolling we have Jessica from Cruelty-Free Cottage who has kindly let us interview her long-legged Jack Russell. Everyone say hello to Jack.

What breed of dog are you? I am a Jack Russell Terrorist aka Jack Russell Terrier. Quite often people will ask my mummy if I am a Parson Russell Terrier as I do have rather long legs for my breed. I’m not supposed to be, but I probably have a bit of Parson in me somewhere since Jack Russells are not a pure breed but have a broad genetic make-up (but who cares about that?!). Some people find it amusing that I am a Jack Russell named Jack but Mummy and Daddy liked the name and thought it suited me. My middle name is Jethro, after the Cornish comedian.

Do you have a nickname? I have loads of nicknames! My mummy and daddy still like to call me Puppy even though I’m not a puppy any more. Mummy likes to call me Jackie a lot too. My other nicknames are Puppy Wuppy, Monkey, Jackie Wackie, Baby Boy, Baby, Jackary, Sweetheart and Pups.

How old are you and how long have you lived with your mummy? I am four and a half and I have lived with my mummy and daddy since I was about eight weeks old. My birthday is the 25th August (exactly one week before my mummy!) and every year I get a special doggy birthday cake and loads of presents to unwrap and we go on a nice long walk to one of my favourite places.

How did your mummy get you? My mummy and daddy decided they were ready to get a dog and decided to get a Jack Russell as they both had past experience looking after the breed. I was born in a village not too far from where I live now. My dog mum lives with a nice young couple and my dog dad lives with their relative. Soon after my mummy and daddy took me home to live with them they learned about dog breeding and the importance of rescuing rather than buying, so any doggy brothers and sisters I get in the future will be adopted from a shelter.

What are some quirky personality traits that you have? Hmm where to start? I am a typical Jack Russell and that means we are full of character. Everyone says I am very intelligent and that the next time they see me I will be talking. I can actually talk a bit, although not human language! If I want something I will stand up like a meerkat or tap a human on the arm or leg, and if they ignore me I will speak, which my mummy says sounds like a groan. Once I have their attention, they will ask me to show them what I want, and I will lead them to the back door if I want to go out, to the front door if I want to go for a walkies or sit on the bench outside, or to the cupboard if I want a treat. Usually I will ask for a treat as I know I will get one – I have my humans well trained! Lots of people say I look like a cow because of my markings so when we walk past a herd of cows in a field I copy them and start frantically eating grass.

Another of my traits is that I love to ring the ship’s bell that we have on the wall at home. If someone tells me to ring the bell I will go and do it, then start singing (howling). Sometimes I will ring the bell just because I feel like it, especially if I’m hyper or if the humans are laughing at something. I also ring it when the rag and bone men come around to collect people’s scrap metal as they also ring a bell to let everyone know they are here. I have to let everyone know that I’m the chief bell ringer. I also love to sing when I hear sirens on the telly or in real life. Speaking of telly, I do like to watch it a bit, especially programs and adverts that have animals in them (which seems to be every other advert these days). I recognize the music of my favourite adverts so when I hear it I run into the room or emerge from under my blanket and jump up to the telly to try and chase the animals. My favourite one is the Specsavers sheepdog advert, I like to have a good sing song to that one.
The bells the bells!
The bells the bells!
I also take after my mummy and share a few of her traits. We are both very nosy and love to know everything that’s going on. If Mummy looks out of a window I get upset that I can’t see what’s going on so I cry until she moves to the side so I can jump up and have a look. I love looking out for the postman and the paperboy and when they put something through the letterbox I run and snatch it as quick as I can then shake it about. I know it’s naughty but I just can’t help myself. I also love to snuggle under a blanket just like Mummy does and I will tap the edge of the blanket and if I can’t get under it myself then Mummy will hold it up so I can go under it. I love to walk along walls as well, which apparently my mummy also loved doing when she was a little girl.

What sort of things do you like doing? I love going on long walks through the countryside and the beach. I’m so lucky to be a Cornish boy born and bred and I am spoiled for choice for lovely places to walk. The beach is my favourite though. I love to swim in the river but I was always afraid of the waves in the sea until last summer when the water was lovely and calm and warm and I finally plucked up the courage to go in. One hot, sunny day the sea was so clear and calm it looked like a tropical ocean and I spent an amazing afternoon swimming with mummy and daddy. It was the best day ever. I also love playing with balls and frisbees and playing games with the humans. My favourite game to play is putting a ball under a cabinet or in the bath and pretending I can’t get it myself. I will cry until they give in and get it for me, but sometimes if they ignore me I will just go and get it myself when they aren't looking. I love opening birthday and Christmas presents and I always help Mummy open her parcels as I can’t wait to see what’s inside. I also like to help rip up cardboard boxes ready for recycling.
Just keep swimming
Just keep swimming

What don’t you like? I hate fireworks and thunder. The loud bangs scare me and I shake with fear so mummy has to turn the telly up really loud so I can’t hear. I am also scared of the hoover so when Mummy announces that Henry is coming I run into another room so I am out of the way. I do not like Henry. I also don’t like cats and I love to chase them even though I am always getting told off for it, but that’s just another typical Jack Russell trait!

Thank you Jessica. Jack sounds like such a funny dog. Teaching him to ring a bell has given me ideas for Pepé when I'm back home.
