*Moonwalks in with a beetroot in hand*
On my path to getting a half-marathon personal best, I read countless articles about beetroot being the new superfood. They are high in nitrates which helps your body utilise oxygen more efficiently. In studies athletes who consumed beetroot juice were able to endure exercise for longer than those who did not consume any. So I popped to my local health food shop and bought a bottle of Beet It beetroot juice.
I ran a half marathon in March and in the fortnight leading up to it I drank around 200ml Beet It beetroot juice each morning. I really, really dislike beetroot so was nervous about my first taste but actually the flavour was light with a hint of apple which made it surprisingly enjoyable. I also knocked off about 1 minute come race day and achieved a personal best. Yay!

Being super cheeky I asked Beet It if I could try one of their new Beet It Sport Pro-Elite bars whilst I train for my next race. Very generously they sent 5 bars as well as 5 sports shots. Due to health reasons I did not end up doing the half marathon but I am still very physically active so took advantage of the Beet It goodies before some HIIT (high intensity interval training) as well as a few long runs.

The Beet It Sport Pro-Elite bars are amazing! Totally not what I was expecting. I was expecting a beigey-brown coloured flapjack bar with speckles of pink. Ooooh no. I teared open the packaging and saw this!

Purple deliciousness!

I could easily have eaten these all at once. They tasted delicious and sweet like you would expect from a flapjack but with a slightly salty after-taste which I really enjoyed. There’s something about mixing salty flavours with sweet that I really enjoy such as salted caramel. Mmmmm. Moist and chewy. Beet It have created the perfect flapjack. The packaging is gorgeous too.
Warning: If you eat one of these before answering the door for the postman, he will comment on your purple tongue.

The second items I received were the Beet It Sport Pro-Elite Shots. 70ml shots supported by Informed Sport which regulates products to ensure they will not fail drug tests. I tried to like these. I really did. As I said, I am not a beetroot fan and the shots were too much for me. I just can’t handle those crazy beets. The texture seemed ‘thick’ to me and the flavour was very strong so I do not think mixing it with another juice would have helped. I only drank two of the five provided and gave the remainder to my beetroot loving sister who will be doing her first triathlon. Hopefully they will help her train.

Despite this, I am a Beet It convert. I will definitely be stocking up on the bars and did enjoy the juice, just not the shots. You don’t have to be an ‘athlete’ either. Anyone can benefit from the power of beetroot.
Oh oh and how could I forget?!?! A final word of warning. Everything you’ve read about beetroot turning your pee pinky red. It’s ALL true so don’t panic the next time you use the loo. This is perfectly normal haha!

Have you tried anything from Beet It? Do you take anything to boost your endurance?

I was able to handle the juice but I think it would be good to mix with other juices or into a smoothie if it is too much for you.
      The flapjacks are delicious!

I had one of the little beet shots in my first JoggBox and quite liked it. It reminded me of liquorice. I really want to try the bars. I am doing my first half in October 🙂

Ooh excellent! Which one are you doing?
I was thinking of getting a months Joggbox to get back into running 🙂
The bars were great to eat pre-run. Not too filling to slow you down or make you feel sick but enough to give you an energy kick.
