|The Lion King musical+|
As someone who hates musicals (please don’t hurt me), I’ve wanted to see The Lion King musical ever since I saw it advertised many-a-year ago. A few years later and finally I booked tickets at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne.
Unsurprisingly tickets quickly sold out and I worried that my seats would be bad. Luckily I was wrong. The performers made full use of the theatre. During the opening song ‘Circle of Life’, there were actors all over the place and not just on the main stage. Huge puppets walked down the aisle right next to me, engaging us as part of Simbas welcoming party.
The puppeters were amazing, turning the stage into the savannah. From herds of gazel to bowing giraffes, The style was very unique. The puppets in War Horse were just as incredible but their style was completely different to The Lion King. With War Horse, the puppets were so realistic with each tiny movement of the horse being so lifelike. I appreciate and love the vastly different style of both productions.
The infamous stampede scene was very creative and done very well. I don’t want to give anything away as I really think you should go see it for yourself. There are definitely some creative geniuses here and it makes sense why The Lion King is one of the best selling and award winning shows out there.
I liked how they made local and cultural references, such as Zazu’s outburst of Frozen’s ‘Let It Go’ and talking about fleeing from Collingwood Childrens Farm. Unexpected and hilarious. As well as all the famous well-known songs, there were a few new ones unique to the show which I thought brought something new to the story.
If you get the chance, go. I was able to pursuade my boyfriend to come with me. Of all the people I know, he is the least likely you’d ever imagine to set foot in a theatre so he was quite relictant to go. Despite this, he loved it. You don’t need kids to enjoy it. We both thought it was incredible. A show for everyone… Even those who hate musicals.
Have you seen anything at the theatre? Is this something you would like to experience?
